An Active Year

The Kansas City Academy of Family Physicians (KCAFP) has had an active year.  The Family Medicine Interest Group at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is having a successful year supported by the KCAFP.  Several educational topics including an EKG workshop and a casting workshop were presented with instructional help provided by the KCAFP. 

Promoting family medicine in the Kansas City community and providing health awareness and education to patients and Greater Kansas City area, the KCAFP provided a special section in the Kansas City Star.  This eight page full color freestanding section inside the Kansas City Star on Sunday October 26, 2008, provided articles written by KCAFP members on Women’s Health, Preventive Health Care, Heart Healthy Living, Pediatric Care, Over 65 Health Issues and Patient Physician Relationships in addition to an article provided by Dr. Wulfers on the Missouri Academy of Family Physicians Dedication to Healthy Families.  The section was distributed to over 225,000 households in the Kansas City area in Missouri and Kansas.

As a group, the KCAFP became involved in community events such as the Breast Cancer Walk and will walk in the MS Walk in Kansas City and St. Joseph.  In addition, the Board of the KCAFP presented Tar Wars to school groups.  The initial presentations were given at Sunny Pointe Elementary School in Blue Springs, Missouri to five fourth grade classes and reached 120 students.  The program was well received and will be expanded in the future.

On a final note, there were several social activities for the KCAFP members held during the year that had great membership participation.  Outings included, Starlight Theatre, T-Bones Baseball and Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s production of Christmas Carol. Academy members and their guests enjoyed all of the events.
