Promoting family medicine in the Kansas City community and providing health awareness and education to patients and Greater Kansas City area, the KCAFP provided a special section in the Kansas City Star.  This eight page full color freestanding section inside the Kansas City Star on Sunday October 17, 2010, provided articles around a theme of  “Everyone deserves a family physician” with a lead article written by Keith Ratcliff, MD.  Article topics included preventive health care, heart healthy living, health screenings, family medicine versus general medicine, coordination of care, family medicine expertise compared to convenience, and when should a patient be screened.  The section was distributed to over 225,000 households in the Kansas City area in Missouri and Kansas.

As a group, the KCAFP continued their involvement in community events such as the Breast Cancer Walk,  the MS Walk in Kansas City and St. Joseph, and the “Kids with Courage” foundation. In addition, the Board of the KCAFP presented Tar Wars to elementary school groups.  The presentations were given to fourth grade classes at St. Terese in Kansas City and Sunny Pointe Elementary School in Blue Springs, Missouri.    The program was well received and there are plans to expand in the future.

On a final note, there were several social activities for the KCAFP members held during the year that had great membership participation.  Outings included an annual production at Starlight Theatre, Missouri Comets and a December holiday event on the Country Club Plaza.  Academy members and their guests enjoyed all of the events.
